Amphitheatre Buttress, Snowdonia Meet

First trip of 1988, we were staying in the North London Mountaineerin
g club hut in Capel Curig.

The weather was not brilliant .. low cloud and very damp, and whilst most participants headed off to the Snowdon Horseshoe, I persuaded Chris and Bryon to come with me for a trip around to Amphitheater Buttress on the Carnedds. It is described as a classic mountaineering route, popular, best in Wales, etc.

We drove around to Llanwrist and then up the "track" to the ruined dam and parked up. It was raining and there was a distinct lack of motivation, but we got out anyway, and started walking in.

As we climbed up the scree to the bottom of the climb there were two blokes who were starting the climb, when we got there they had not moved far at all... not good news

half an hour later and we were still not moving ..  they were having an epic, so we cut our losses and headed to the back of the ampitheatre and a diff up a rib.

In bog boots and with things rather wet this turned a lot harder than we had imagined, but still better than the other party were making out.

Much grunting and groaning later we made it to the top Carnedd Llywelyn.

Back down the ridge above the crag and down he path to the car. Back at the hut we all regaled each other of tales of daring do and the frustrations of being stuck behind some people well beyond their comfort zone
