Our first day up high, was going to be a very simple walk, but this was the first time we had been over 3000m for a while. SO the first part was to take the train up to the Jungfraujoch and walk up to the Monchjoch hutte.
We left the van at the mountain hostel, and walked down to the train station at Grund. we paid the exorbitant price for a single ticket to the top, and waited for the next train.
The first section took us to Kleiner Scheidegg, roughly following the line that we had walked yesterday. We had all our kit with us, but the train was crowded so it sat on our laps with the skis between our legs.
From Kleiner Scheidegg, we changed trains for the upper section, and combined with a train from Lauterbrunnen. Here as washte case all those years ago with Dave, the kit went into an open truck on the front, but at least we had a more comfortable ride. This train then went into the tunnel to the top. We did the tourist thing at both the intermediate stops, and joined the masses as they gazed out the north face, and also the Icemeer windows.
The train pulled into the top station, and we collected our kit, then fought with all the tourists to get out of the station, then through the various tunnels and out onto the glacier.
Back out in the daylight again, we had plenty of time to look around and get ready for the next section of walking to the monchjoch.
Looking towards the Louihorn, we could see streams of people skinning up.. It seems we had a better option being a day behind everyone else.
We admired the Aletsch glacier disappearing into the distance, little knowing we would be skiing it in a few days time.
We set off up the track ... a big pisted track well trodden by all the tourists going to the hut for lunch.
Looking back to the Jungfrau we could see the route for tomorrow up the Louihorn.
As we got closer we picked up the hut, nestling on the side of the col.
It was exactly the same as I had remembered it for the summer trips many years ago.
We settled in for afternoon, and enjoyed the sun, and a great dinner.
