We had booked an apartment in Disentis .. further up the same Rhine valley.. it was cheaper than the hostels there and looked too good to be true (we would find out the final catch later) but the only initial thought was the extras - 100 chf we would have to pay for cleaning added after the transaction was completed.
The idea was to check out the road heads and see where they were blocked against snow .. then we could work out what routes appealed.
First off (mainly because we missed the turning up the road to Sedrun) was to head south towards the lake at Lukmanier pass.
Here we met the barrier at S. Gions.. it would have been better if it could have gone a but closer to the lake.. beyond the long flat bit.
There were some routes to either side of this valley but they looked like they would need a walk to get to the snow.
Then we went up the valley to the west towards Oberalp pass.. this stopped at Tschamut Silva. a few kms beyond the Sedrun ski station.
There looked to be a few avalanche debris trails across the road showing why it stopped here.
The low level of the most did not allow us to see much, however ....
Bryon had the opportunity to get his notebook and pen out every 15 mins and record the train numbers, size and carriage types as the St Moritz/ Zermatt and the Sedrun/ Andermatt trains went passed. This would prove to be a good topic of conversation for the next few days.
Back to Disentis for a look around ... parking in one of the pay car parks we wandered into town .. passed the big monestery - Claustra di Mustér and its museum.
We soon found ourselves at the train station to check out train prices to Andermatt, as a wet day alternative, however this also lead us to the station buffet and lunch ..
We had arranged to meet the local agent for the flat at 3pm .. and were waiting outside slightly early .. no sign and no response to the phone..
After several tries and text messages to say she was "on the way" we got a call at 4:30 saying the door was open and we should let ourselves in.
The apartment itself was better than expected, with a large seating area and table with three beds in an alcove. ... Ideal for what we wanted... however the formalities would taint this perception, as we would not see or talk to anyone until the morning of leaving...
Outside the window of the apartment, was this mock chateau... apparently there was some history to the place.. but not a lot was around.
That night we wandered back into town to find food .. after several places not grabbing us we chose to go into Pizzeria Surselva .. a friendly place with good pizza's and a small pebble with a face on it anchoring the bill.
