Still at University in London, but in contact with Toby as he was doing an accountancy course, and several others from the entertainments group as well as the walking group. We continued to have some varied trips.
This was also the year that Jim and continued the hitchhiking ventures from last year. We had several adventures, but relating them to the trips is very hazy. what we learned was always have a marker pen and a large piece of cardboard. Always change lifts at service stations, and hide the big rucksacs
We went to the lakes, from the bottom of the M1, but got dropped at the motorway exit and had to walk down the slip road avoiding the police, then the only lift we could get on the Lancaster road was in the back of an articulated lorry. this took us to Kendal, where we gave in and took a bus to Ambleside. the return was easier, as we started hitching at the correct junction of the motorway.
Another trip we were back late and got stuck at Coventry services well after dark on a wet night ... no one wanted to give us a lift, and eventually we got one to Watford where we caught the train back to London, by now it was just in time for lectures.
A further trip, Jim and I hitched up to Kendal, whee we met Graham, in his new Fiat50 .. with a broken front set, so Jim and I were squeezed into the back with all the gear. After the weekend, Graham took us back to the top of the M56 before he headed east and we sat in the services for hours trying for a lift.
Other memories include a guy who got upset we would not travel with him as he was not even going as far as the first service station ... this was critical to getting the next lift.
