By chance Ken was working in Crawley, and a room came up in the flat he was renting, so I moved in. We would then use this to plan weekends in the mountains .. I don't have much recall of these trips, and only a few photos.
At the local rocks we met young lads from close to us in Crawley who we got talking to and would be joining up with in 1983 ... However these are what I recall from 1982.
One of the trips .. not detailed .. we had a problem on the way back ... the weather was not good, rain and spray on the motorway, and after we had just changed drivers ... Ken was driving, xx was in the back sleeping on the rear bench, and I was in the front passenger seat, as next up to drive. We stopped on the end of a queue, and got hit up the rear by a Datsun Cherry doing 70 mph when it hit us, we cannoned into the car in front then the central barrier. Two Squaddies were late for their ferry back to Germany, and had been driving too long.
The good luck bit was that I had a seat belt on - more as a head rest - which stopped me going through the windscreen, the guy in the back had their feet up which prevented then getting trapped as the seat came off its mountings and ran into the front seats. My seat came off its mountings and my knees were saved as they went under the parcel shelf. Ken hit the steering wheel with his head.
The Police came and dragged us off the road, and the AA man took us to Watford Gap services. I volunteered to stay with the car and protect the climbing gear .. no windows, so to protect from the rain and wind I taped newspaper over them. Many hours later the guys came back and the AA picked us up... we made it home in several relays. Just in time to go to work.
