travel, Switzerland

The Mittelegi ridge of the Eiger from Grindlewald
Overnight we had discussed what we could do.  M-J's foot was causing her problems, and we proposed to have a travel day, followed by a couple of descent days ...  one of the good descents in the area is the length of the Aletsch glacier...  Bryon and I had not done it before and it would make an interesting end to the descent.

To do this we needed to get up the Jungfraujoch ... I felt a train ride coming on ... or two in reality.

Camping Rendevous - Kanderstegg
After breakfast we set off from Bourg St. Pierrre and headed for the tunnel at Goppenstein above Gampel at the end of the Fafleralp valley .. where we had been two years before -  the last time we had been in the Bernese Alps.

We hopped on the train and rode it through to Kandersteg. On the other side we stopped for some lunch and visited the the restaurant/ gite at Camping Rendevous we had stayed all those years ago on the first winter visit to the alps ...  it had changed a lot, but we found the place.

From here we drove around to Grindelwald .. we aimed to stay at the mountain hostel we had used last time ...  unfortunately it was closed for the week, we tried the other hostel we had seen last year, and that was closed too...  as a last resort we went to the tourist office, who gave us a brochure of gite/ hotels to try ..the first we tried at Stalden - the Hotel Stalden had two rooms available ...  result. Even better the food was delicious.
