Oberaar & Finsteraarhorn hutte, Switzerland

Not too early a start for most of us, We were heading for the small summit behind the hut, and then on over a pass to the Finsteraarhorn hut. Bryon and Chris left much earlier to climb the Finsteraarhorn by the SE ridge, and we would catch up with then at the Finsteraarhorn hutte.

Oberaarhorn from the Gemschliche
The Oberaarhorn is a little rocky spur rising above the pass, but gives great views of everything around.
After the summit, and returning to the hut to collect our things we headed off to the Gemschliche pass, which is the traditional route over to the Finsteraarhorn hut.

The route up to the col was a simple gentle slope, but the fun and games started on the other side. The descent was on very loose mica shale, extremely slippy and hard to control. I made a mental note to avoid it on the return trip and go around via the glacier.

Once down on the glacier it was a simple trip on the morain up to the hut.
The sting in the tail was the 60 m climb to get up to the hut from the glacier. Everyone was tired by now and it was hard work to get there. This time we correctly booked in for dinner as well. The only worrying thing was by the time dinner was over, Bryon and Chris had not made it down, even by bed time they were still not in. We would find out in the morning.
