Chanctonbury Hill Again, South Downs

As the morning progressed the sun came out, so Bertie and I headed off for a stroll around Chantonbury Hill. The idea was to park in the SDW Washington car park, climb up the hill from the north side then slalom down the south side until getting to Cissbury Ring. Then working across to North Farm and across the A24 around Windlesham school and back to the car park.

We parked in the small car park where the SDW crosses the A24 near Washington and set off up the SDW track. At the point where the track curved away we left the SDW and crossed into a field that led into the woods of the Wiston estate.
This track angled down before curving upwards with increasing steepness up towards the trees of the ring. Coming out onto the ridge.
North from the ridge across the fields of Sussex.

Onwards to the wood copse and the iron age fort.
Back on the SDW across the tumuli and down to the next valley dip.
At the track crossroads we cut back along a bridleway on the first zigzag of the slalom, and down into the woods below.
Along Buddington Bottom then the second hairpin of the slalom, and up a farm track above Findon Park House.
Less of a hairpin and more of a curve around as we climbed to join another farm track looking over Cissbury Ring.
At the next big track crossroads we took the sharp turn of the next slalom, around a kestrel hovering above. The Sim card failed at this point and it took a while for me to realise. We crossed over again to the next junction of bridleways, where we did the next turn on the slalom
Sim changed as we dropped down Stump bottom facing Cissbury ring. Continuing down to the farm track back to the edge of the ring.
End of the slalom at the car park at the bottom of Cissbury ring, now to wind our way back up. Following the wide track up to the crossroads we had already been to and taking the west ward path beside the racehorse training field
Turning up the track to Gallops farm just before entering the village of Findon. Then through the farm and down the other side through the horse paddocks.
Down the farm track all the way to North Farm - now an industrial park with winery tours, cafe and other works. Across the A24 using the access bridge in preference to charging over the road.
Down the drive to Windlesham school, until following the bridleway around the school grounds, and down the access road from the other side.
This road went through the edge of the school and onto a bridleway at the other side. this paralleled the A24. This bridleway continues up to the SDW, where we follow it back across the A24 (dodging the traffic over the carriageways) to the car park.
