The forecast was for strong winds and showers, so I planned a walk along the beach between Lancing and Shoreham. Parking in South Lancing beach car park then along the beach to Shoreham, turning around at the breakwater and around Shoreham fort then back again.
There was plenty of room in the car park (apart from the the learner drivers practicing parking), and we parked up, paid our fee (£4 for the day) and set out across the green to the row of beach huts, and hence down to the beach. Lancing Beach was crossed by large stone groynes and as the tide was far enough out we could cross them down at the sea end where there was more space between each boulder. The other obstacle was the sewage overflow pipes - luckily dry at the moment.
The end of the groynes marked the change into Shoreham - still walking on the beach although it was now just shingle.
Continuing on the shingle around to the west breakwater, although we had to angle back up the beach to the point where the breakwater started so we could get off the beach.
Looking over into Shoreham harbour the east end and the small beach between the breakwater and west pier.
To get the full picture we walked along the breakwater to the end Giving views along to Brighton and up towards Beachy head.
The panorama back from the breakwater.
Shoreham fort was closed (I doubt Bertie would have been allowed in anyway) but we could walk around the outside. The wind was mainly coming off the sea but there was a slight angle that now blew across our faces for the return.
We walked back along the top of the beach. The Shoreham end had a boardwalk along the length of the spit. Bertie got distracted by the large number of doggie "newspapers" and we had a short discussion about speeding up his reading.
The boardwalk ended at recreation ground and we continued on a disused road behind beach huts then on the top of the shingle bank as we moved into the responsibility of Lancing.
A paved track started as we passed alongside the Widewater Lagoons
As we moved further along Lancing beach we passed a large static caravan park, and then back into the beach huts
A final opening out before the next row of beach huts, and an opportunity to taking the wind surfers and kite surfers
The last bit, across the grass and back to the car park.
