After the first day's stroll around the town, and yesterday where we did lots of "Hurry up and wait" I felt a need to get some serious exercise.
There was 2 hours before we had to be on the coaches again so I opted for a walk around the lake of the same name as the town. I picked up a simple map which showed a good track around it and through it would be possible as long as I did not dawdle. So out of the barracks and down the road outside along the route to the edge of town, where I took the road heading towards the lake. After a wiggle I began to see the lake appear.
A trail marker showed the way to go along a gravel track slightly away from the lake edge.
Closer to the lake edge as the land jutted into the water with a solitary bench looking out. I followed the trail around the end of the peninsular and back towards the town.
The track edged along a playing field (I cut across it) and along the edge of the residential area, before cutting down to the same stream from the last walk
Over the stream past a wider area with Lilly pads and a large tower
Back to the lake edge, and then a drive way along the edge.
The drive led to a camping site that had a large number of caravans & camping cars
Just past the campsite there were some pontoons for boats as well as swimming with one brave soul stepping into the water.
The track returned to gravel as it dropped to the end of the lake and around the bottom. I could look up the whole of the lake from here.
Around the end and past the scout hut I followed a gravel driveway up to the back road that went along the far side of the lake.
Once on the back road I followed it up the far side and took the left turns where it joined other roads. These continued around the top of the lake (far enough away so that the lake is not really visible).
At the top of the lake I followed the road until it met up with the one I had come out on. Turning down this to return to the barracks (also remembering to go up to the main gate and come back from there).
Back at the barracks I even had time to have a shower before changing into the clothes for the march through the town.
