We were visiting Wildax in Lowfields business park Elland to get some warranty work done on the van, and rather than spend all day sat in the portacabin we chose to take a stroll into the town of Elland. Sue was still suffering from arthritis of the knee so we could not go as far as I would normally, and I thought we could go along the Calder and Hebble canal then cut up to the town, coming back along the river Calder.
Walking out of the factory gates and along the maze of roads in the industrial estate we crossed over the river Calder to the units on the other side. I had hoped there would be a path connecting to the canal from there. We found a twitten that joined the canal near a lock, then turned down the tow path towards the town.
Reaching the tow path diversion near the old gasworks site. This diversion took us back to the river Calder.
Crossing the river and looking at the chimneys of the old exchange Mill - they were all topped off by trees growing out of the top. We then followed the road around aiming for the town centre.
Climbing up the slope between heavy grey sandstone buildings. then a side road up past the church that brought us to the main street.
The main street was being refreshed with a gravel topping leading down between the shop buildings.
We wandered down the street stopping only in few shops to the roundabout at the end then back along it to a chip shop we had past on the way down. Stopping for a sit down fish & chips (freshly cooked) with just a couple of pensioners for company.
After lunch we continued back to the factory, first back to the river Calder next to the mill chimneys. Then along the riverside walk.
Under the A629 and back to the bridge we first crossed the river on. I did stop on the bridge to take a picture of the hill slope on the other side that I would have walked to if Sue's knee was better.
Back into the industrial area and along to the factory where we waited out the rest of the day in the portacabin looking at the next batch of vans being converted.
