It was supposed to be cooler today after the heights of yesterday, but even so I determined to get out early. My idea was to walk across to Wellcross and come back with Sue after she had finished visiting her mother. To take in some tracks I had not been on, I diverted south to Newpound before beginning the traverse and its associated move back up (north) to the the end goal.
The initial start tot he walk was along the very frequented parish border path to Wlthurst farm, then (because I knew the ongoing track was very brambly) I cur across to Skiff Lane and walked along it to the outskirts of Wisborough Green. Here I picked up a path that cut over towards Durbans lane.Around the edge of a horse field (they were hiding in the lower corner). then over a stream and up along a rape seed field.
Over Durbans lane and along gravel tracks that mutate into a path. Over the path cross roads coming out opposite Fishers farm. Along Newpound lane to the B2133 and onto the driveway beyond.
Down the drive to Paplands farm and into the fields beyond
Down the to the canal and disused lock, over this and on passing the weir
Climbing up the very rutted track towards Rowner farm before turning off into a grass field leading to Rowner road.
Down the farm driveway to the Hampshires, where the path continued down a farm lane. The lane ended at a stream and we continued on a path through a small copse.
Up into a grass field with a couple of path crossroads moving into Leyhold hanger.
Along a grass field to the units below Okehurst road.
A strange junction then led the path into a harvested crop field that was crossed and along the far side to reach the A29
Google maps showed a way through Summer's place however there was a large sign on the lane indicating that it was not a public footpath. A retreat and plan B up the A29
Along the A29 to the next path going my way and into the overgrown field after a stile.
Across a stream in a copse and into grass fields where the path was just discernible crossing to the woods on the far side.
A green lane throguh the woods and into a cow field. this led to an overgrown gate and foot bridge into a second cow field. In this one the cows and their offspring we gathers by a gate onto the lane I had tried to go down earlier. I could not find the ongoing path so climbed over the gate and onto the lane. Down the lane to new road (freshly skimmed with gravel).
Along the road until a sharp bend where I took the driveway to upper Woodhouse farm. Then a mowed path into the open fields of Faulding estate.
A zigzag aroudn a large goose pond and down along side the estate buildings.
Over a lane and into another cow field - this time the bullocks ran away. Following the path across an extension to the first field.
Looking down to Sumners ponds and campsite, before turning across a grass field and up to a farm lane.
Just before Muntham house school, I turned down a path along the boundary edge.
Over a dirt lane and into an arboretum - not sure what to expect here but maybe need to come back and explore more.
Out of he diversion into the recreation grounds, crossing down to sandhills road
Along a path behind the houses of Barns Green and into a newer estate that led down to the railway line
Under the railway and along the path that followed it on the other side. this path continued passed a path crossways and pedestrian crossing of the rails, before following the edge of a huge sweetcorn field.
Eventually merging onto the downs link, and along the edge of Christ's hospital school.
Into the edge of the village of the same name, following the tracks beside the roads leading to the station
On the Downs link track under the railway line and up the other side. I took the path leading down to the river Arun ( a more direct route than continuing on the downs link). Along the river in the woods until crossing a series of footbridges into fields.
Beside the fields (and the river to one side- hidden by bushes). There were a number of brambles along here that had occasional ripe blackberries, perfect for providing some liquid.
Approaching the byway from Broadbridge heath, then a zigzag to go down a rape seed field to the aircraft landing strip, next to Wellcross. Around the end of the path and into the car park to find Sue waiting.
