The January AAC walk had slipped into February, and was slated to start at Bosham rail station, and walk up to Kingley vale through West Ashling, and West Stoke. From the top the route dropped down to Stoughton for lunch at the Hare & Hounds Inn. Back up to the ridge and down to Funtington and back to the rail station.
I arrived early to the station so I could get a parking place (there were only a few there) and waited for the others to turn up. They arrived on the train from London apart from two who we would catch up on the way.
To avoid the B2146 for a bit we did a circuit through the fields up to and back along the edge of the A27. A short section on the B road before crossing into fields beside Breadbare copse. The path continued into Merryfields plantation - a very muddy track with lots of signs to keep out of the woods.Out of the woods and into a drier field with our first views across to Kingley Vale. Down the field East Ashling and onto the back roads. First the B2178 then a back road up to trust car park.
We met one of the missing participants here and on up the cinder path towards the vale.
Into the vale by the main gate, and on to the yew tree glades. A pause for coffee around the bigger glades then out into the vale basin.
Up the steep step route to the path at the top.
On to the Devil's Humps, with views north. Next we followed the main track along the ridge through the trees. the track curved down through the fields to Stoughton.
Lunch in the pub - actually more speedy than usual. We actually kept the stop down to 90 mins.
Leaving the pub with a short diversion up to the church. Then along the back road Walderton.
Down beside horse fields before a steep climb through the woods back up to the ridge. Up on the top more views down to Chichester harbourt.
Down through the fields to Adsdean Park, then around the farm of the same name. Over a back road and along the side of some fields (this maybe more unofficial paths) into Funtington village.
Out of the village and into more fields, before reaching another back road. Along this into Millpond turning down a private road to access a path leading to Southbrook. Over a chalk stream, and onto the busier roads.
Along the B2146, although we did cut the corner beside a caravan park. This re-joined the B road where it crossed the A27. Then eschewing the route we followed in the morning we powered down the road back to the station. Everyone made the 5pm train back to London.
