The weather was improving, and the rain had stopped, however the wind was still blowing quite hard. So a day for seeing things - we had been around the Viking centre at Ribe, and continued on to the coast taking the causeway across to the island of Rømø. Here we continued straight across to the beach at Lakolk.
I was not prepared for how busy it would be ... there were a large number of people and cars. So I pulled into the car park of the shopping arcade that was in front of the campsite.Once parked it was easier to then walk down to the beach - again not sure if you needed to be in the campsite (this turned out to not be a problem).
The road was still busy going down to the beach and we would find out why once we got there!
At the entrance to the beach through the sand dunes - much the same as we had experienced at Tornby the road emptied straight onto the sand.
The beach opened out in front of us and exposed a huge number of cars arrayed along it. I have never seen so many campervans/ motorhomes in one place.
The sea was a long way off ... however as the vehicles testified the sand was firm under foot.
We crossed the flat expanse to first reach the lifeguard station (with mobile toilets - 20kr charge) and then the sea ... the lifeguard station seemed to be at the normal highwater mark, beyond it the sand changed - there was a line of crushed shells and debris from the last high tide.
Looking along the waters edge and the occasional swimmers.
We walked along the waters edge - Sue and Katie looking for shells and any amber.
After a kilometre or so along the beach we reached the limit of vehicle access - marked by a line of poles preventing further vehicle access. We turned towards the dunes and past a second WC block
The map showed me a path rising through the dunes before turning back to the shopping and car park complex.
However the path rose up a sandy break in the dunes, and both Sue and Katie opted to avoid the instability, also reinforced by the fact that I could not guarantee the state of the paths on the other side.
Up the slight ramp of the dune and the view opened up on the other side looking across the Maron grass to the buildings.
The path on the far side was better than I had expected and was predominately grass.
I followed the rack to the edge of the buildings and just before the final row of dunes I turned along the furrow and followed the path towards the car park.
Over the final bump and the car park came into view. The path led to the edge of it and the camp site.
through the mass of cars and back to our car, where I waited for the others to catch back up.
Enough for one day so back to the apartment, stopping for food on the way.
