This was the Tirpitz constellation - a couple of large bunkers that were never finished, neither was their associated accommodation and services. They were planned to have a huge turret from a battleship on top of a huge 3m thick square bunker.
After chasing around the back roads we finally found the car park - well actually the overspill one - which was a large ploughed sandy lot.
Then followed the signs to a path that would lead to the museum. This went through the dunes, climbing slightly.
Over a final ramp and the museum complex opened in front of us. This was mostly buried under ground with a sloping ramp entrance.
We went around the museum - spending time looking at the exhibits on concrete us and standardisation of bunkers, before going around the remains of the main bunker.
The whole exhibit was crowded, with people milling around all with the audio tour glued to their ears.
We escaped the throngs of people, looking for a good place to have our picnic. Down the path to the car park before turning away.
Along this path we came to the twin of the bunker we had just left - Tirpitz 2.
This was a shadow of the one we just been around, and was blocked off to public access. However we could walk around the outside, and sit on a dune above it to have our picnic.
We took a more direct route back to the car park - over the dunes. The path undulated over the dunes parallel to our outward route.
Sue managed the broken ground very well.
The final dune had a view over to the Tirpitz 1 bunker, then down to the path we had followed before and hence back to the car park.
