I had to take the van out for its biweekly run to ensure it did not go flat
on us. Things did not get off to a good start when I realised (once we were
nearly at the storage location) I had left the keys back at the house - an
additional 90 minute round trip back to get them.
Once that was all sorted and back at the van we took it out and drove south
down the A40, before seeing the sign to the gold mines.
There was not real plan, except it was somewhere we didn't think we had been
before.
We parked up and went up to the entrance (luckily it was NT and we had our cards so entrance was free).
We also signed up for the self guided "Roman mine" tour which would encompass more of a walk, and required us to take a hard had and access key.
The trail to the mine started up the side of the quarry along some steep steps, and past an older entrance
At the entrance to the Roman site we passed through a square entrance and along a tunnel - going through the access gate.
At the end of the tunnel were the remains of the cavern (two sides) where the main workings had been.
then some steep steps to get out at the top of the hill.
Over the top of the hill and down the back passing the Victorian processing plant foundations, as well as seeing the water and drainage archaeology around.
On the other side of the quarry was the Victorian mine entrance - equally gated and our key would not allow entrance. We did pass the organised tour and it was too many and we would not have enjoyed it.
Finally back to the quarry base past an old stone with folk lore attached.
Just a short stroll, then it was time to return the van and go home.
