The fort from Aussois |
The aim for this year was to do the high level traverse route in the Maurienne area.
We (Bryon, Chris, M-J and myself) headed first for Aussois, to get some training in and get fit before heading up to the hills. Chris and M-J had enjoyed the year before and wanted to do some more.

Outside the fort |
I had planned (but not booked) to stay at the fort Marie-Christine ... when we were there previously we had seen it under renovation, but now it was a gite that mainly catered for school parties. We did not mind, as they had some bunks in a room for us.

In the roof |
The place was a great old building with the main floors divided into a number of smaller rooms (6 beds in 3 bunks) split up by bathrooms.
|
Through the window of the room |
From our room there was a small window, which opened out into one of the cannon embrasures looking across to Aussois viullage.

Looking down to the other two forts |
The other side looked down deep into the Maurienne valley and two additional forts (Fort Marie Therese, and fort Victro Emmanuelle - both Vauban I believe, and we had visited them a few years earlier out of curiosity), and a much older one - Fort Charles Felix.
All in all a great place to spend the night.
