We decided to return to Switzerland again after the last two years in Austria and try to finish the haute route "missing" section. We would get mountain fit using routes from the Lammeranhutte in the Bernese alps, then move across to the Vallais.
Due to other commitments the date was changing and we finally settles on the Saturday, with a relaxed start - a late afternoon crossing to Calais, followed by a short drive Reims, where we had a room booked in the usual F1 hotel, before we crashed out. The next day we continued the journey across France... over the mountains at Pontallier, and into Switzerland.
We remembered to buy a vignette at the border .. so we made use of the ,motorways around to Sion, before heading into the mountains up to Leukerbad. I had booked us into a triple room at the Derby hotel, which, apart from being very run down, served us very well for the two nights we eventually stayed there.
So after settling in we set off to explore, first to see where the cable car and what was the outlay, then down through the old town and into the newer section and the "baths".
The town was very empty and had a clear end of season feel, although there were numerous people partaking of the waters.
We had to hunt out dinner in the town .. a pizza/ pasta place was chosen, and we all eat far too much before settling down to sleep with plans for the next day.
