When we were in Castletown, we could see there was a spit of land beyond the harbour. There were a number of walks around it starting at various points, but we settled on the car park on St Michael's Island .. This was separated by a causeway from the main spit, but had the remains of a fort (Derby fort) and a chapel.
It was a popular dog walking spot. After walking around the island we then headed off to the other end of the spit, across the causeway, and past the derelict hotel. The fort was all locked up, but you could see through the gun ports
looking across to Castletown and the coast north.
Working around the hotel remains and up onto the golf course that took the most of the spit ... however there was supposed to be a footpath along the sea edge of the land, above the rocky edge.
At the far end of the golf course was a gate labeled "SHEEP" which led into an open pasture land, and also had a lookout tower on the high point.
Here we came across the first sightings of the seals ... the further we went the more we saw.
towards the end of the island
The lighthouse, and fog horn
The end of the spit/ island was a flatter area giving more views of the seals, as well as some divers operating out of a rib boat. As well as a tourist expedition.
At the tower .. a hollow tube with an open staircase. here we made our way back down the landward side of the spit ... however once we met the golf course there was only one way across - back to the seaward side. then back to the ruined hotel and across the causeway to the van.
Flights in and out of the airport .. commercial jets and props but we also had a visit from then RAF hawk trainers.
Back at the van we dropped down to the beach and had a picnic. sheltering for the slight breeze.
