With the view so good we went for a stroll across the breach and up around the outside of the castle walls. Looking back at the inner and outer harbours.
Bright sun, clear blue skies and very little wind made it very hot.
Returning to the car we had to pass the castle entrance, and popped in for a closer look. despite the rundown porta-cabin as the office the interior was well looked after .. with access to top of the main castle tower - not the older round one in the middle of the bailey. They also provided a commentary against a number of tags around the site.
Inside was a mixture of Clerical and military buildings, and quite a confusion as to what was used for what over the years. Far more to take in than you envision at the start.
Eventually we were persuaded to leave as they wanted to shut the gates ... so back to the van and heading off to the campsite, which was north and a little east of here.
