Then the return - we set of early (8am) in the morning after packing the van (it
took no longer than most mornings, just a few more bags. Down to the Coop for
some rolls for lunch and we headed off down the valley, where we avoided the
motorways as our vignette had run out - We had bought a vignette (motorway pass)
on entry to Austria as we arrived directly on a motorway, for the minimum of 10
days - we did not anticipate moving around very much. This involved having to
drive into Innsbruck to find the road out to Imst for the pass over to Germany.
I had planned the route the night before, however it transpired on the day that
there was a blockage on the pass that would lead to over 90 mins delay in queues
avoiding first a tunnel under repair, then a rockfall - I should have
checked it out after breakfast quickly once again.
Further delays on autobahn roadwork queues would add a further 30mins, so we
turned up to our accommodation after 10pm. In the dark it is always a challenge
finding the way into the F1 hotels, and this was no exception - first the
entrance was not where the website said it would be, then the key pad on the
gate was not working outside, and you had to use the inside one to open it.
However we were so tired we just crashed.
The morning started with all the workers leaving early, but this helped later on
as we arrived in the ferry port of Dunkirk with perfect timing to get on the
10am ferry. We crawled through the booking, and both immigration as well as two
vehicle checks (aligned with the immigration booths), then turned into the
channel as it started to board. (noted that there were no huge queues of either
cars or lorries.
Second breakfast underway as we pulled out of the port into a very calm
crossing, arriving back in Dover on time to check out the queues - huge lorry
ones, but also a full lane of cars (why is this only on the UK side?).
Time to check out the shipping as we crossed over the flat sea
Home by early afternoon to unpack and get the washing started, as Bryon
continued onward.
