Another bright and hot day - too hot for a long walk, so I tried to find something with some shade. Looking on a tourist map of Aalborg, there was a city zoo that we could get to by walking through several parks (After negotiating a local highway - not as bad as it seemed at first due to the Danes principle of putting cycle/ pedestrian tracks beside roads).
We could get up to the highway via a ramp leading from the apartment building, this then led over a viaduct that crossed a new construction of a canal and road works.
Over the rail lines and past a building clad in the rusty steel cladding - this was the main post building for the city.
There was a set of stairs leading off the viaduct just after the post building which offered a way off the side of the highway, so we dropped down to a grass field park - slightly off track but it seemed better than beside the busy road.
Leaving the park and up a grass reserve between two lanes of a local residential street, nicely managed with a windy path through the middle.
This led up to a hospital complex where we turned back to a park the original path would have led through.
The park was difficult to enter, as from this side all paths led to a sports complex, but we eventually went through a car park and into the trees. Here the path had low level lighting all along it. What our city map did not show was that there was a steady climb through it.
Leaving the first wood and over the road to a second one. The path on the city map did not seem to exist, however there was a well marked on (still climbing) through the wood.
A slight diversion as I was not sure where the zoo entrance was and walked through a car park extension and through a series of forest paths back to the side of the zoo - here the tree pathways showed us the way back, although it did look like the higher routes were not in use.
We then spent a couple of hours wandering around the zoo exhibits following the numbering scheme. After pausing for lunch we returned along the original planned route - this took us through the two woods (there was a steep descent down the northern side of the sports arena past an area set up for concerts. Finally back along the highway - it is really disconcerting where cyclists appear behind and pass you with no noise!
