We drove around to Maughold village via a circuitous route, having missed the turn for the major road ... and parked up outside the church.
Walking around and behind the church we could see the mound standing up, with a path zigzagging up it.The church yard wall was not level but rose up behind the taller headstones for this large graveyard
from the top of the mound we could see back to where we had come ... the antennae sitting on the top. In the other direction was the head and the sea
looking towards Snaefell.
A walk back down the grassy path to the road from the church yard - perilous in places as the dry grass was slippy on the steeper sections - then we took the path to the lighthouse ... all locked up and sealed from visitors.
as there was no path along the coast from the lighthouse we had to retreat back to the church yard and cut down through the fields.
The map showed a path leading down to the beach and an opportunity for a late lunch.
Unfortunately we were just beaten to it by another group .. who were probably equally disappointed not to have the place to themselves. However we moved around the corner somewhat and found a secluded ledge.
Lunch watching the sea and the feathered companion chasing bread crusts.
Setting off again ... the path wandered around the cliff and came to a flat open area ... would have made a good lunch stop
looking back on both sides of this promontory
As we came around the bend to the Port .. the beach was made up of large flattish stones ... with several shelters on it and each one had a stone chimney for a fire/ barbecue .. very well constructed.
The final section was through a tall reed bed which made an interesting change, and was also cooler.
We finished up on the Port Mooar beach, where I watched people building one of those pretentious "carbuncle" homes on the hill side, as Sue went beach-combing.
Then we had the drag back up the road to the van ..
